Twilio SMS for School Meals Pro

Keep families informed before meals are missed.

School Meals SMS connects School Meals Pro with your Twilio account to send meal reminders, order confirmations, birthday greetings, and targeted broadcasts—with consent controls and delivery tracking built in.

Four communication workflows

Send the right message for each moment in the meal journey.

Every workflow can use editable message templates and School Meals data. Parents receive messages only when their stored phone number matches the number associated with the relevant consent.

Missing-meal reminders

Check students whose school serves meals on the target day and alert the parent when no qualifying order is found. Choose the send time, order statuses, and a lookahead from 0 to 14 days.

🧾

Order confirmations

Send one service message per registered-customer order from classic checkout or Checkout Blocks, with variables for totals, status, students, schools, payment method, and more.

🎂

Birthday greetings

Use saved student dates of birth to send scheduled greetings. Each child receives at most one birthday message per year.

📣

Targeted broadcasts

Queue a general announcement for all opted-in School Meals parents or target one school. Each matching parent receives one message even with multiple students or orders.

🛡️

Consent and quiet days

Separate service notifications from broadcasts and promotions. Parents can choose days without optional reminders, birthdays, or broadcasts while important service messages remain available.

📊

Delivery history

Review the latest message logs with recipient, type, Twilio SID, status, and error details. Delivery webhooks update records through accepted, queued, sent, delivered, undelivered, or failed states.

From Twilio to the parent

Consent lifecycle

Preferences parents can control

The plugin records consent type, status, phone number, source, statement version, and timestamp. Consent is optional and is not required to place an order.

  • Separate service and broadcast opt-ins
  • Registration fields and a configurable reminder popup
  • My Account SMS Preferences page
  • STOP, START, and UNSTOP webhook processing
  • Configurable data-retention periods

Credentials and webhooks

Designed for safer Twilio connectivity

The API Key Secret and Account Auth Token are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM using a site-specific key derived from WordPress salts. Incoming and delivery-status callbacks are rejected unless the Twilio request signature is valid.

You supply the Twilio service. The plugin does not include a Twilio account, phone number, SMS credits, carrier registration, or Twilio messaging fees.
Performance and maintenance

Built to handle growing order history without scanning everything for every reminder.

A dedicated meal index mirrors the School Meals order-item fields needed for reminders. It can be rebuilt in background batches, updates when new orders and status changes occur, and can be cleared without deleting WooCommerce orders.

Which Twilio credentials are required?

The settings require the Twilio Account SID, an API Key SID and its secret, the 32-character Account Auth Token, and a Twilio sending phone number. The API key authenticates API requests; the Account Auth Token verifies incoming STOP/START and delivery-status webhooks.

What do parent quiet days block?

They skip optional meal reminders, birthday greetings, and broadcasts on selected weekdays. Order confirmations, cancellation messages, and urgent schedule changes remain available because they contain important service information.

Can broadcasts target only one school?

Yes. Administrators can choose all School Meals parents or one configured school. Only parents with matching broadcast consent and a valid consented phone are included.

What happens when Twilio temporarily fails?

Retryable sending errors are queued again using increasing delays. The plugin allows up to three attempts and records the current status or final error in the message log.

What are the technical requirements?

WordPress 6.4+, PHP 7.4+, WooCommerce 8.6+, and School Meals Pro by Delyriaz are required. Valid parent and SMS add-on licenses are required to start SMS features.
