Structured allergen awareness for School Meals Pro

Connect each student’s allergy profile to every meal decision.

School Allergies adds structured meal allergens, nutrition details, live student matching, configurable warnings or blocking, and historical order snapshots—helping families, schools, and kitchens communicate risk more consistently.

Structured data instead of scattered notes

Declare meal allergens once and carry them through School Meals.

Add allergen selections and nutrition information to WooCommerce products, individual variations, or shared Meal Group profiles. Equivalent products can inherit one common profile unless a product or variation supplies its own values.

P

Product and variation fields

Configure allergens and nutrition in the WooCommerce product editor. A variation can use its own structured values or inherit from its parent product.

G

Shared Meal Group profiles

Assign allergens, nutrition, and a cross-contact note to a School Meals Pro Meal Group so connected products can inherit a consistent profile.

R

Restaurant Portal integration

The School Meals Portal product editor receives the same allergen checkboxes and nutrition field, and duplicated products keep their configured information.

!

Live assignment warning

When a family selects a student for a meal, the page immediately shows any recognized allergens shared by the meal and that student’s saved allergy text.

×

Optional hard blocking

Choose warning mode for visible communication or blocking mode to prevent a conflicting student assignment and stop checkout until the conflict is resolved.

A

Historical order snapshots

The selected meal allergens and detected conflicts are copied into WooCommerce line-item metadata, preserving what was known when the order was placed.

Nine standardized groups

Recognize common allergy language in English and Spanish.

The matcher normalizes accents and checks the student’s existing School Meals allergy text against synonyms for these structured product groups.

1Milk / dairy / leche
2Egg / huevo
3Peanuts / cacahuate / maní
4Tree nuts / nueces
5Soy / soya
6Wheat / gluten / trigo
7Fish / pescado
8Shellfish / mariscos
9Sesame / tahini / sésamo

Student-aware meal assignment

Show the conflict at the moment a meal is assigned.

The plugin compares the effective allergen profile of the exact product or variation against the selected student’s saved allergy field.

  • Warnings update immediately when the student selection changes
  • The message names the recognized conflicting allergens
  • Blocking mode validates again during submission and checkout
  • Both the assignment-page and checkout assignment workflows are supported

Blocking mode enabled

From product setup to kitchen communication

Keep allergen details attached to the meal as it moves.

Declare the mealSelect intentionally or potentially present allergens and add nutrition details at the product, variation, or Meal Group level.
Match the studentEnglish and Spanish synonyms convert the student’s free-text allergy profile into comparable structured groups.
Warn or preventDisplay an immediate warning, or block assignment and checkout when the configured profiles conflict.
Preserve and reportStore allergen and conflict snapshots with the order item and expose the information to reports and food-label templates.

Customer-facing information

Show declared allergens and nutrition on product pages

Enable or disable allergen and nutrition displays independently. Product pages can list the effective allergen profile and place nutrition information inside an expandable section.

  • Allergen list can show “None declared” when empty
  • Nutrition preserves readable line breaks
  • Product and Meal Group inheritance reduces repeated entry
  • Legacy Portal allergy text can be recognized during migration

Kitchen and audit context

Add the meal’s allergens to reports, PDFs, and labels

When report integration is enabled, School Meals receives notes such as the meal’s declared allergens and a prominent allergy-match message. Label templates gain a dedicated variable:

{meal_allergens}

Because the order item stores a snapshot, later changes to the product do not silently rewrite the historical allergen information captured for that order.

Requirements, limitations, and answers

An additional communication layer—not a substitute for food-safety procedures.

Requires WordPress 6.4+, PHP 7.4+, WooCommerce 8.6+, and School Meals Pro by Delyriaz. It declares compatibility with WooCommerce HPOS and Cart/Checkout blocks.

Does the plugin automatically know every ingredient?

No. An authorized person must accurately configure each product, variation, or Meal Group. The plugin compares the information entered into the system; it does not inspect food or verify supplier ingredients.

What is the difference between warning and blocking mode?

Warning mode displays the detected match while allowing the workflow to continue. Blocking mode also rejects the conflicting meal assignment and prevents checkout until the assignment changes.

How does inheritance work?

A variation first uses its own structured allergen and nutrition values. If empty, it can inherit from its parent product. If no product-level value exists, a connected School Meals Pro Meal Group profile can supply it.

Can restaurants edit this information?

Yes, when School Meals Portal is active. Its product editor receives allergen selections and nutrition fields, and copied products retain the configured values.

Will old orders change if a product is updated?

No. Meal allergens and detected conflicts are stored as order-item snapshots during checkout, so historical reports keep the information captured for that purchase.

Does blocking guarantee that a meal is safe?

No. Matching depends on the meal configuration and the student’s saved allergy text. Ingredient verification, cross-contact controls, staff training, medical guidance, and emergency procedures remain the responsibility of the school and food provider.

Food-safety notice: School Allergies assists with allergen communication and workflow checks. It cannot detect undeclared ingredients, preparation changes, supplier substitutions, cross-contact, or incomplete student information. Always follow professional food-safety and emergency procedures.
